Crescent Grove Cemetery
Portland, Oregon
A recent study conducted by American Cemetery found that approximately 62% of Oregon residents prefer cremation to traditional burial. And for Crescent Grove Cemetery in Portland, this meant it was time to re-evaluate its cremation options.
Since its inception in 1852, Crescent Grove has served the needs of families throughout the growing suburbs of Southwest Portland. Now surrounded by large shopping areas and major thoroughfares, this serene memorial park is a small sanctuary in an otherwise chaotic world.
“This is a special place. And when we started seeing more demand for cremation options—beyond the old area with a small, individual cremation garden—we started looking for options that would match our elegant park,” says Nancy Felton, General Manager.
“A true cremation memorialization is something we know the baby boom generation is looking for.”
Nancy and the board at Crescent Grove began searching for the right kind of solution—one that would compliment their aesthetic, without taking up too much precious space. After thinking through several options, Nancy put a call into Tim Bronleewe, President of Oregon Memorials.
“We’d created several stones for families in Crescent Grove over the years; we had a pretty good idea what would work in their park,” said Bronleewe.
“Our designers sat down with Nancy and came up with an elegant, cost-effective solution she could take to her board that both matched their aesthetic and offered a true return on investment,” added Bronleewe.
After reviewing several designs and bids from a variety of providers, Crescent Grove elected to add a unique series of three columbaria built by Oregon Memorials. Placed in a circular arrangement and including a stone fountain and benches, the columbaria provide a unique sanctuary where families could meditate and remember their loved ones.
“We’re very happy with how this area turned out. Oregon Memorials was the only company that offered a 100% polished granite columbaria—inside and out—at a price we could afford. And, they delivered and installed the units exactly how we’d envisioned,” said Felton.
“Crescent Grove has developed a tiered pricing structure and sells single and double niches, with different prices based on the location families choose.
“Our families who’ve chosen this option are delighted to have a special area where they can easily remember their loved ones, and in a few years, these columbaria will have paid for themselves.”
